The story of the Blue Heron Soy Candle Company

Many of my customers have asked me why I started the blue heron soy candle
company? Why did I insist upon 100% pure soy and why chose the name,

Blue Heron.
It was a few years into my marriage when my husband developed cancer and
needed extensive treatment. During his radiation and chemotherapy treatment
period, every time I lit a candle, it made him sick. At the time, we thought it
was the fragrance that was causing it. One day, I lit a soy blend candle as I’d
been told it was a healthier choice. Sure enough, on this very day may husband
arrived home earlier than expected and walked into the room full of candle
fragrance. He still got sick, but nowhere near as bad as usual and I began to
ask ‘why?’
Being a curious person by nature, it prompted me to carry out some tests. Test
One: to burn a paraffin candle and yes, it made him sick. Test two: to burn a
soy blend candle and test, it made him sick – but not like the paraffin candle.
Test three: I burned a pure 100% soy candle and as we have now come to
suspect, it did not bother him at all.
There was the answer, but I still wanted to know why?
I researched the market to find a supplier of pure soy wax and began making
my own soy candles. We did the test over and over again and got the same
results every time (my poor hubby was the test victim). We continued to use
the same fragrance but made changes to the wax to get accurate results.
Further research uncovered the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
determination that paraffin wax candles emit potentially dangerous
substances. They further determined that paraffin candle burning is the
Number 1 home environment pollutant!
We now knew that my husband had been reacting badly to the toxins emitted
from the paraffin candles and not the fragrance. His system was already
compromised by cancer and its treatments and he was unable to tolerate the
contaminates.
When we burned the clean 100% pure soy was candles he exhibited none of the
traits associated with paraffin.
Why Blue Heron?

Fueled by my knowledge of the need for 100% soy candles, my hobby grew
into a business. But what I needed was a company name. Morning after
morning, whilst drinking coffee, I’d watch a blue heron outside my window
along a stream and ponder its beauty. I began to realize that the Great Blue
Heron’s presence filled me with the same calm, peaceful feeling that a warm
cozy fragrant candle did. All of a sudden, I knew it – and the blue heron
candle company was born.
